THE ARKANSAS RIVER

The Arkansas River Valley is surrounded by 14’ers and is beautiful water. It is typified by fishing the banks for aggressive brown trout. It is particularly known for its early Caddis hatch and Hoppers later in the summer months.

The Upper Arkansas is not only one of the most scenic rivers in our area, but it is full of browns that are eager to feast. In between Leadville and Buena Vista are the best access to the headwaters. In this section you can wade back and forth across the river any time of the year that is not frozen.

The Arkansas below Buena Vista through Salida and into Canon City grows in size. The drop in elevation throughout the course of the whole river makes it unique because there is always a section of water, regardless of how hot or cold the weather is, that is fishing well.
