Healthy rivers are the whole reason we get to do this. A few simple habits on the water keep Colorado's trout strong through the hot months and the busy seasons.
CARRY A THERMOMETER
To fish or not to fish.
We recommend every angler practice ethical fishing and carry a thermometer. Water conditions can change quickly, and checking water temps throughout your day will help protect the fisheries we all love.
The chart here, provided by Colorado Trout Unlimited, is a great measure for temperature gauges and what to watch for. Get on the water in the early morning hours for the best water temps, and be sure to check temps for when you should plan to wrap up.
ON THE WATER
- · Carry a thermometer and check water temps throughout the day
- · Keep fish wet: handle them in or over the water, with wet hands or a rubber net
- · Land fish quickly so they have the energy to recover
- · When the water is warm, skip the pictures and minimize time out of the water
- · Respect private property and give other anglers room
- · Pack out everything you pack in, including tippet scraps
